Why Are City People Voting Biden?
If you’ve seen his TV ads or mailers, you know Trump’s reelection campaign is based on fear and paranoia. They talk about the “far left,” socialism, the “biased media” and they like showing pictures of Ilhan Omar (because she’s Muslim and to Trump supporters Muslim = bad). Trump’s advertisements also focus a lot on turmoil in cities. The riots. The burning buildings. The rage against various injustices.
Yet, people living in the city are voting for Biden. Why is that?
American cities have played host to a lot of anger in the past year, anger that was sparked primarily by police killing Black people—and then our president’s ignorance and harmful rhetoric added to it. He calls his incendiary bluster, “law and order.” He takes responsibility for suppressing violence in various cities, but in reality, he has not. He is, however, a liar (which he showed again at the debate last week, and every other day and night for that matter) and his position as a law and order guy is one of the things he lies about. I find it remarkable that people believe him, but they do.
The thing I loathe most about Trump’s lies is that they make his followers hate the truth and with it, reality.
I wrote a while ago about all the Trump signs I see in the country, miles away from the Twin Cities, in assorted rural communities. One of the reasons people in small town Wisconsin like him is because he says he’s tough on crime (the crime shown on the nightly news, not happening in their towns). My cousin just…
