When Bad is So Bad, Great is Unreal

A friend’s recent social post lauded New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern for her action and accomplishments after a terror attack, when a volcano erupted and killed tourists, and how she has dealt with the outbreak of a global pandemic—all while having an infant (she gave birth in June, 2018). She is a good leader—which is what she was elected to be (just a guess).

A little bit about Ardern.

Last March, after 51 people died and 49 others were injured, she acknowledged that the terror attack exposed loopholes in New Zealand’s gun laws. Then she took immediate action to close the loopholes. No thoughts. No prayers. She used common sense and did something helpful for the people who elected her to do useful things. When she introduced stricter firearm regulations, people in America were either thrilled that a world leader could get it right—or they were angry that a world leader would do anything to infringe upon a gun owner’s rights.

When the coronavirus came, she rolled out a coherent and intelligent plan. She acknowledged a problem and worked to solve it. She reacted quickly, it worked and she’s received praise for her empathy, communication and leadership.

After a quick Wikipedia dive to get the headlines, it looks like the 38 year old is focused on addressing child poverty. Lengthening paid maternity leave and…
