Why Can’t This Be Love?
Good morning, good day and good afternoon Packers and Van Halen fans.
The Packers selected Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of last night’s draft. They had the 30th pick but traded it (and a fourth rounder) to move up to draft Love at 26—nobody seems to know why GM Brian Gutekunst traded up to get him but we do know Rodgers is entering his late-thirties and we’ve seen how QBs can fade. That said, Rodgers is still really good, has four years left on his contract and upper management just invited drama into an organization that—with a really good draft—seemed poised to compete for a Super Bowl in 2020.
Okay, so, a little perspective on the guy who learned from Ron Wolf (who traded for Favre) and Ted Thompson (who drafted Rodgers). In February, Gutey talked about his schooling and the importance of drafting the right quarterback when he comes along: “Everything I’ve been taught, that’s where you start, you start with the quarterback, so you evaluate them every year, and I think it’s always on the table. It’s a good crop this year, it’s a good group of quarterbacks. I think it’s a little deeper than it has been in the past…”
