Looking Back at the Packers Drafts in My Lifetime (‘83-’89 edition)

Hello, sports fans and welcome to a sports thing!

Since there aren’t any sports on TV or your radio (except The Last Dance), the upcoming NFL draft seems like the biggest and most looked-forward-to one of my entire lifetime. Which got me thinking about all of the drafts since I came into this world, namely those of my favorite team — the Green Bay Packers.

So, I went back through them, jotted some notes about the Packers teams (since 1983) and have compiled the names of their first-round picks (and other notable picks, or picks they should’ve made) from every draft since I was born.

1983

In ’83, the Pack was coached by one of my dad’s boyhood heroes, Bart Starr. Excellent quarterback, great leader, historic winner, he married a woman named Cherry — he was not a great coach. The team’s president at the time was Robert Parins, Bob to his friends (probably) and the team’s GM and future president was Bob (to everybody) Harlan. The team failed to make the playoffs that season as they always did in the ’70s and ’80s but in 1983, that fate was reserved for the last game of the season which they lost to the Bears. The Rams got in, the Pack were out, Starr got fired. Washington went on to beat Miami in the Super Bowl, blah blah blah.
